Thomas McBay
C.E.O. / President, American GeoPower
Thomas has a broad background in commercial and residential real estate development, contract law, commercial law, marketing, leveraged financing, and business operations. He also founded and runs a specialty coffee roasting company for over 30 years.
An accomplished chef and professional baker, Thomas is also a specialty coffee roast master. After studying at Cabrillo College, he planned to become a real estate attorney, but his life path changed when he moved to Japan in 1990 to raise a family.
As the first foreigner to live in Nakatsugawa, Japan, Thomas began teaching English conversation—eventually teaching large classes for companies like Ricoh Emmex, Mitsubishi Electric, and the City of Nakatsugawa. He now teaches small private lessons.
He believes that Japanese students need to spend less time memorizing English and more time speaking it. His passion is helping people break barriers through authentic conversation and connection.
Thomas and his wife raised their two sons bilingually in Nakatsugawa. Both sons now live independently in California. In his spare time, Thomas enjoys walking, exploring, and learning anything and everything.
