Closed Loop Molten Salt Geothermal Energy Collection System
American GeoPower has an advanced geothermal energy system called the Closed Loop Molten Salt Geothermal Energy Collection System, which is under patent in the USA. AGP also has a patented System, Method, and Apparatus for Extracting Heat from Geothermal Brine, granted in the US and filed in 33 countries.
Our unique system can be used in two ways: either we bring up geothermal fluids and transfer the heat to molten salt for storage, or we send molten salt down into the heat zone, extract the heat, and bring it to the surface. The first method handles fluids from 160°C to 350°C. The second handles ultra-high temperatures from 226°C up to 1000°C in the case of crustal magma or superheated rock.
Molten salt, with over 28,000 patents in the US, has been used for more than 100 years in applications like aluminum smelting, thermochemical processing, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR), Molten Salt Thorium Nuclear Reactors, Concentrated Solar Power, hydrocarbon separation, and many more.
Molten salt is a superior Heat Transfer Fluid (HTF). It’s environmentally benign, non-toxic, non-flammable, and lasts over 30 years with minimal degradation. It’s 2–4 times more thermally conductive than water, has a low vapor pressure, high specific heat capacity, loses only 1% of its heat daily in a properly insulated tank, is stable above 400°C, and depending on the salt species, works from 65°C to 1000°C. Our Closed Loop System is essentially a simple underground heat exchanger.
